A young local university with limited programmes; students seeking other fields travel to Quetta or beyond
Loralai sits in northeastern Balochistan, in the Pashtun belt of the province. Loralai University was established in 2019 — a recent and welcome addition — but as a young institution it offers a limited range of programmes. Students whose ambitions fall outside what is available locally still face the familiar journey to Quetta or to the major cities of Punjab and Sindh.
The district's literacy rate of around 40% reflects a wider reality: higher education has historically been the exception, not the expectation. Families often have no prior experience of the university application process, and schools are rarely equipped to guide students through SAT preparation, personal statements, or scholarship applications.
The pathways out exist. Loralai students qualify for the LUMS National Outreach Programme and the Balochistan Government Scholarship, both of which target students from exactly this kind of district. With the right preparation, a student from Loralai can attend a top national university at little or no cost.
