Geographic isolation in winter makes Chitral effectively cut off from the rest of KPK; limited local institutions; AKDN presence has improved schooling but university access remains difficult
Chitral is one of Pakistan's most geographically isolated districts. In winter, when the Lowari Pass is closed, Chitral is accessible only by air. This physical isolation has shaped the district's educational trajectory: the Aga Khan Development Network has operated schools and programmes in Chitral for decades, producing a relatively education-oriented population — but the pathway from secondary school to university requires leaving the district, and in Chitral's case, leaving it permanently for several years.
The AKDN's presence in Chitral makes the Aga Khan Foundation scholarship a particularly relevant resource. Students from AKDN schools have succeeded in obtaining AKF scholarships and gaining admission to Aga Khan University, LUMS, and international institutions. The KPK Government Scholarship also covers Chitral students.
Students from Chitral who have pursued higher education describe navigating not only the logistical challenges but the psychological ones: being one of very few people from your community to attend a major Pakistani university, with no established social network in Karachi or Lahore or Islamabad, and no family experience to draw on.

Do not wait until FSc is complete to start preparing — SAT preparation and personal statement work should begin in your second year of FSc.
Daakhla is new and has not yet guided a student from Chitral — you could be the first. Geographic isolation does not have to mean educational isolation; it just requires earlier planning and better information. The Aga Khan Foundation scholarship and LUMS NOP are open now, and we will help you plan around them.
