What is Regular Decision?

Regular Decision is the standard, non-binding application round at US universities, with deadlines typically in January and decisions released in late March.

Definition

Regular Decision (RD) is the standard application timeline for most US universities. Deadlines are typically January 1 or January 15. Decisions are released in late March or April, and the national commitment deadline is May 1.

Regular Decision is non-binding — you can apply to multiple universities and compare offers before deciding. Most students who apply to multiple US universities submit at least some applications Regular Decision.

Why it matters for Pakistani students

Regular Decision gives you the most flexibility: time to strengthen your application after early rounds, ability to compare financial aid offers, and no binding commitment. For Pakistani students building a list of US universities, applying to some schools Early Action (if available) and the rest Regular Decision is a common strategy. Note that some selective universities have significantly lower RD acceptance rates — applying early when possible is advisable.
