What is CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average)?

CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average) is the overall GPA calculated across all semesters of university study, typically on a 4.0 scale in Pakistan.

Definition

CGPA is the standard academic performance metric at Pakistani universities. It is calculated each semester and accumulated across a student's degree — hence "cumulative." Pakistani universities use a 4.0 scale, though specific grading policies vary (some use letter grades converted to a 4-point scale; others use a direct numerical system).

Most Pakistani scholarship renewals require a minimum CGPA — typically 2.5–3.0. Falling below the threshold can result in scholarship cancellation. Academic probation is typically triggered at a CGPA below 2.0.

Why it matters for Pakistani students

Your CGPA is the primary metric for scholarship renewal, graduate school admissions, and many job applications in Pakistan. If you are on a need-based scholarship, maintain your CGPA above the threshold specified in your scholarship letter — this is non-negotiable. For graduate school applications (local or international), CGPA above 3.5 is generally expected; 3.7+ is competitive.
