Higher literacy than other underserved regions, but significant rural-urban gap within AJK itself and limited access to elite institutions
AJK has the highest literacy rate among Pakistan's underserved regions — a legacy of strong community investment in education and the economic support of a large overseas diaspora (particularly in the UK). Students from Mirpur, the most economically developed district of AJK, have family connections to the UK that occasionally open pathways unavailable to other Pakistani students.
However, significant disparities exist within AJK itself. Students from Rawalakot, Poonch, Haveli, and Bagh face much more limited access than their counterparts in Mirpur. Access to elite Pakistani institutions — LUMS, IBA, Habib — requires the same navigation as anywhere else: SAT preparation, personal statements, financial aid applications, and knowledge of what is available.
AJK students applying to federal universities in Islamabad (QAU, NUST, COMSATS) benefit from AJK quota seats with lower merit thresholds. The AJK government also runs scholarship programmes for students at universities across Pakistan.
Full scholarship — tuition, accommodation, and monthly stipend
Up to Rs 40,000 per semester (tuition support)
Full scholarship — tuition, housing, and monthly living stipend
Full tuition reimbursement at public-sector universities
Up to 100% tuition waiver based on financial need
AJK quota seats at QAU, NUST, and COMSATS provide a real advantage for students from this region — the merit threshold is lower than open merit, making it easier to secure admission to federal institutions in Islamabad. If you are from Mirpur and have family abroad, UK universities via UCAS are a realistic option worth exploring alongside Pakistani applications. Apply to both in parallel.
Daakhla is new and has not yet guided a student from AJK — you could be the first. The AJK quota seats at NUST, COMSATS, and Quaid-i-Azam University, combined with need-based aid, are real pathways, and we will help you use them.
