A personal statement is a 500–650 word essay submitted as part of a university application in which the applicant explains who they are, what has shaped them, and why they are applying.
The personal statement is the primary opportunity for an applicant to speak directly to an admissions reader — to convey character, voice, intellectual curiosity, and purpose beyond grades and test scores. It is the most personalised element of a university application.
Pakistani universities with personal statement requirements include LUMS and Habib University. For US universities using the Common App, the 650-word Common App essay functions as a personal statement. UCAS (UK) requires a 4,000-character personal statement focused primarily on academic interest.
A strong personal statement is specific, honest, and reveals something true about the applicant that cannot be found elsewhere in the application. Weak personal statements list achievements (which belong elsewhere) or make generic claims about wanting to help Pakistan.
Pakistani students often struggle with personal statements because academic writing in Pakistan teaches argument and analysis, not personal reflection. The shift to first-person, introspective writing is unfamiliar. Common mistakes: starting too broadly, summarising your CV, using overly formal language, and not revising enough. Daakhla mentors review personal statements through multiple drafts — this is one of the highest-value things we do.
