What is Need-Aware Admission?

Need-aware admission is a university admissions policy in which a student's financial need or ability to pay may be considered as part of the admission decision.

Definition

At need-aware institutions, the admissions office knows whether you have applied for financial aid when making admission decisions. This can disadvantage applicants who need full financial support, since admitting them costs the university more. Need-aware institutions may accept full-pay students with lower academic credentials over need-based applicants with stronger profiles, when the class is nearly full.

The degree to which need-awareness affects outcomes varies widely. Some institutions are need-aware only at the margins (for borderline cases when the class is nearly full); others factor it in more broadly.

Why it matters for Pakistani students

Most Pakistani universities and the majority of US universities are need-aware. This does not mean you should not apply for financial aid — it means you should apply to a mix of need-blind and need-aware institutions. For need-aware institutions, having a scholarship award in hand (such as PEEF or a provincial scholarship) and demonstrating academic strength can offset the disadvantage of needing significant institutional aid.
