Financial Aid

What is CSS Profile?

The CSS Profile is a College Board financial aid application used by approximately 400 US universities to assess financial need for non-government aid, supplementing or replacing the FAFSA for international and domestic students.

Definition

The CSS Profile (College Scholarship Service Profile) collects detailed financial information — family income, assets, debts, household size, and more — to help universities determine how much need-based aid a student should receive. It is more detailed than the FAFSA and used by most selective US private universities.

For Pakistani students applying to US universities, the CSS Profile is typically the financial aid application to complete. FAFSA is for US citizens and permanent residents only. The CSS Profile costs approximately USD 25 for the first institution and USD 16 for additional schools.

Why it matters for Pakistani students

If you are applying to need-blind US universities with the goal of securing maximum financial aid, completing the CSS Profile accurately and on time is essential. Submit it at the same time as your application — do not wait for admission before filing. CSS Profile data is typically required by November (for Early Action/Decision) and January (for Regular Decision). Errors or omissions in the CSS Profile can result in an inaccurate financial aid assessment.
